I am glad you had fun. My family did a similar thing last summer. Except they join a tour group from Los Angeles to Japan then afterwards they go to Taiwan on their own. There is no shopping at all.
I guess any tour group from US will not have shopping stop. All Taiwan tour group will have a shopping stop. Because the Taiwan tour group charge so less?
I would prefer to pay a little up front and no shopping stop.
