7750 chronograph mechanism via lever and slideway
5100 chronograph mechanism via cams and clutch zenith cal 400 chronograph mechanism via column wheel and clutch FP 1185 chronograph mechanism via column wheel and clutch column wheel

BB,
Great stuff. I appreciate all the information. I'm wondering about the same thing about IWC too. My understanding is that they only use the movement base, and they basically rework and refinish the entire movement. You can't even use regular ETA and Valjoux parts for repair. On the other hand, I don't think IWC as lowly as you have perceived. I do think they offer good quality, and they are quite respectable for many people in the watch circle (of course, opposition exists too). I personally prefer an IWC over a Rolex, however, you are right about not to tell newbies to pay so much for a Valjoux movement (I learned my lesson the hard way.. I didn't explain it enough). If they plug those ebauches straight into the case, then I'll have a huge problem with that. But knowing that they are just "stealing" the movement base, it eases my concern quite a bit. I guess the ultimate question is, how much reworking can be done to a movement. I don't know the answer, and if there's anyone who knows, please share. I'm pretty desperate to find out and don't know where to look. Anyway, If you give me $3000-$4000, I wouldn't get either IWC or Rolex. I just want to share my thoughts, and I hope you don't mind. fb |
