Rene Burri, the Magnum photographer, took this photo of Che Guevara in Havana in January 1963. The meeting an interview for Look magazine, an American bi-weekly with 9 million readers, had required permission from the Pentagon and the CIA at a time of high bilateral tension, following the Bay of Pigs disaster and the Cuban missile crisis.
Burri's iconic photograph of Che, his eyes burning, his expression invested with merciless power, has become increasingly famous over time. Today it can be found on T-shirts, wine labels, mugs and even on soap powder, with the absurd logo "Che Washes Whiter".
